Imagine yourself sitting in front of a computer. Right in front of you there are two choices for completing your task; you can either do it the old way or do it the new way. You must be wondering what I´m referring to: I´m talking about writing and publishing an argumentative essay. The old way is writing up a simple, traditional essay using the usual format which is based on a series of paragraphs. The new way would be taking all of the information you wrote and turning it into a website, a video, a podcast, or things of that sort. Recently, I created an essay in both ways and the experiences had some similarities as well as differences.
When I started creating my website, I realized that these methods have several things in common. First of all, for both of them I began by brainstorming and completing a pre-write to organize my ideas and plan out how I wanted things to go. They were both very useful because they helped me know what I was going to write about and how to put things together without wasting a lot of time in figuring out minor details while at the same time trying to write the entire piece. The two methods also had in common the fact that they were based upon the same ideas about the negative effects of social media and even though I was pretty certain about what I wanted my final outcome to be like, I still had to put some time and effort into getting them to be just as I pictured them.
Despite the processes being somewhat similar, they were also different in some aspects. First off, while I was writing the essay the old way I had to come up with everything from scratch and put together all of my ideas to make coherent sentences and paragraphs that would convey my message, but when I was turning it into a new media platform, most of it was already written down and I just had to break it apart and organize it a little different. Besides this, the most important difference would be the way they are set up and published. The website is much more engaging and creative since it uses different images and videos to keep the audience interested while the essay is simply a bunch of text with no decorations.
While I was writing the actual essay, the most difficult part was figuring out how to write down all of the different ideas I had going on in my mind and finding a way of putting them all together so that they were coherent and easy to understand. Although this took me some time, I actually had a lot of fun writing it up and researching about the different topics because I got to know a lot of things that I had no idea about such as all the different effects that a simple game can have on our brains, our how exposed we are to dangers daily, or how much things have changed in the last couple of years because of technology.
As I was making the website, I realized that it was very cool changing my writing up a little bit and making the entire thing more creative by giving it a more visual approach rather than simply having words. I enjoyed making the website although I got a little frustrated when I couldn´t find pictures or videos that portrayed my ideas and there was really no way that I could represent them myself. In the end I think all of it paid off and I got to have two different approaches on the same assignment which made me realize that everyone has different interests and specific ways in which they prefer to complete certain tasks.
