1. There was a worldwide economic depression which hit Germany really hard, leaving millions of people without work and the Germans lacked confidence in their government because of the humiliating defeat during World War I.
2. a) Kristallnacht was a series of attacks against Jewish from the Germans. The name comes from all the broken glass that was left in the streets after destroying all the buildings owned by Jews. B) Nuremburg laws were a set of laws that were created by Germany, removing Jewish influences in society.
3. Jeannine Burk was born in September 15, 1939 in Belgium. There came the time when the Jews were starting to get chased in this country too, and Jeannine and her family were all Jew kids. When she was three, her father found a place for her brother to go, for her to go, and for her sister to go. They were separated and that as the last time she saw her father. She lived in this house for two years; she was never mistreated but she was never loved, she never received kisses or hugs. She isn’t allowed in the front yard and was occasionally allowed in the backyard. She could never leave the house because the Nazis couldn’t see her or they would take her. While she was there, her father was taken as a soldier for the Gestapo. In the fall of 1944 her mother went to get her and then they went to get her sister, who had a bone disease called osteomyelitis. Her brother found the way back to the house they lived in. The three kids and their mother used to wait for their father to come home, until one day they found out their father had been exterminated. He had been exterminated just because he was a Jew, and the kids were taken the right and privilege of having a complete family. Her mother died in February 1950, when Jeannine was ten, because of breast cancer.
In March 1950, the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union was having the 50th anniversary in Atlantic City. Jeannine and her sister were invited and treated as royalty; they even received gifts. After they returned to Belgium, the Savages offered to get her to America. She was given the chance to get adopted and have a better life; but only her, because her brother was married and had to kids and her sister was engaged to be married. When she got to New York, after an eighteen hour flight, she was turning twelve, and she was adopted by a family. She got married when she was young, had two boys, and later on she got divorced. In the 1970’s she met Maurice, a widower with four children but the most wonderful person. They have six children and nine grandchildren. In 1985, she went to the World Gathering of Holocaust Survivors in Philadelphia, where it finally sank in that her father was never coming back. She doesn’t know where she was hidden, she doesn’t know the woman’s name, and she wants to thank her and do something for her; for her children since the woman is certainly dead.
